The unofficial start of summer vacation season is here, after coming in with a bang Memorial Day weekend. Though property management is a year-round job, the heavy vacation season ramps up the workload, and stress levels, as we strive to take care of guests, issues, owners, repairs, and all the factors that go into a rental property. How many times has dealing with a booking inquiry taken you away from a family meal or woken you up in the middle of the night? Too many #amiright. Here are our 5 tips to survive the wild, crazy summer vacation season.
According to the estimates, online vacation rentals revenue in the U.S. market are approximately 18 billion U.S. dollars. Looking at just our own local headquarters, And how much American vacationers are willing to spend to get the “perfect vacation” continues to rise (along with their expectations).
All of this is good news for the industry but. . . we understand that the busy seasons can really wear down the rental property manager’s mental well being. Along with its emotional toll, prolonged job-related stress can drastically affect your physical health. In the short term, a stressful work environment can contribute to problems such as a headache, stomachache, sleep deprivation, short temper and difficulty concentrating. Chronic stress can result in anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system.
We get it and understand your stress, because we work in this industry, too. Because of that, we’ve put together some tips that we hope will help you take better care of yourself during the busy summer vacation season:
Do something other than work for at least 15 minutes twice a day. Stretch, move your body, meditate, chat with a co-worker about a non-job topic or simply sit quietly with your eyes closed and breathe out in the sun, take a walk around the block, to get your blood moving. All of this refocuses your mind so you can get back at it. (We here at Bookfull are big fans of a quick bout of seated dancing to release stress and spark some energy. Don’t be shy! Your co-workers may even join in.)
Plan out your meals for the week, including what you will eat for lunch. Then take time the night before to pack a healthy lunch for the next day. Make sure to include some lean protein, salad or fresh veggies, and fresh fruit for lasting energy with no afternoon slump.
Drink more water
Staying well-hydrated is crucial to your productivity, energy levels and overall health. Water helps you stay alert and refreshed and promotes clear thinking.
Maintain good posture
Maintaining good posture all day requires conscious effort. Most employees, who use computers, stare into their screen for hours and slowly get drawn into it. This means they stretch their neck forward, which puts pressure on the neck and the spine. This can be avoided with the help of some at-desks exercises. The most popular one entails chin retractions or making a fake double chin, to support the neck and upper back.
Stay Organized: Manage the Chaos
Planning ahead to stay organized can greatly decrease stress at work. Being organized with your time means less rushing in the morning to avoid being late and rushing to get out of the office at the end of the day.
